Callosities on Feet: Causes and Effective Treatment

19 May 20262 min read

Callosities, commonly known as calluses, are thickened areas of skin that develop due to repeated friction or pressure. They are most often seen on the soles of the feet, especially under the heels and balls of the feet.

These thickened patches form as a protective response of the skin but can become painful if excessive pressure continues. Ill-fitting footwear, high heels, prolonged standing, abnormal gait, and foot deformities like bunions or flat feet are common causes.
Callosities are usually yellowish, rough, and less sensitive than surrounding skin. However, deep calluses can cause discomfort while walking and may crack, leading to pain or infection.

Treatment focuses on reducing pressure and softening the thickened skin. This includes:
Wearing well-fitted, cushioned footwear
Using silicone pads or insoles
Regular moisturizing with urea or salicylic acid creams
Professional paring or debridement by a dermatologist
Avoid self-cutting calluses at home, as it may lead to injury or infection—especially in diabetic patients.
Preventive care is essential. Regular foot care, proper footwear, and addressing underlying biomechanical issues can significantly reduce recurrence.
